I couldn’t sleep that night.
My phone screen had gone dark a while ago, but I still held it in my hand like I was waiting for something. A message, maybe. Or just a reason to stop thinking.
The room felt too quiet. Every small sound stood out, the fan spinning, a car passing somewhere far away. I turned to the window, hoping it would distract me.
The sky was clear.
There weren’t that many stars, but enough to notice. I didn’t really think about anything at first. I just looked.
Then one of them stood out.
It wasn’t huge or anything, just brighter than the rest. Easy to find, even when I looked away and looked back again. I kept my eyes on it without really knowing why.
I thought about how some things stay longer than others. Not forever, just longer. Long enough to matter.
The sky slowly started to change. It wasn’t sudden, just a slow shift. The dark fading a little at a time.
Some of the stars disappeared.
But that one was still there.
I kept watching it, even as the light grew stronger. Even when it got harder to see.
I didn’t know why it felt important. It just did.
One star shone brighter than the rest, and somehow I knew it was the last star that would hold on to me the longest. But would it stay with me even after the sun rose?
I asked myself.
Am I happy that I get to see it?
or
Am I sad that it might go away anytime?
